How is hardwood lump charcoal different from other chemically enhanced types of charcoal?
Generally speaking, manufacturers grind small pieces of natural charcoal (not necessarily hardwood) to powder consistency. Then they mix it with 60% fillers (i.e., sand, straw, etc.). It is bound together with a petroleum coating to hold its form. It takes so long to turn a gray ash color because you must first burn off the chemical coating. Using lighter fluid adds one more chemical to your cooking process.
How is natural charcoal made?
All our charcoal is made from Ozark hardwoods, primarily oak and hickory. These low-resin hardwoods have long been recognized for their superior charcoal. They produce very dense charcoal that burns cleanly and gives a high amount of energy for its weight.
The wood is stacked in large steel ovens where the temperature inside rises to approximately 900 degrees, which cooks the liquors out of the wood. The wood becomes carbonized creating natural hardwood charcoal.
How do I start my Hasty Bake Hardwood Charcoal?
You can start your Hasty Bake charcoal in a number of ways. Our favorite process is to use Hasty Bake Firegel, which is an alcohol-based gel that leaves behind no fumes or bad tastes that you would get from the lighter fluid. Hasty Bake Fire Gel provides a solid flame for 7 to 9 minutes. If you own a Hasty Bake, squeeze a baseball size (in diameter) amount onto the ash pan (underneath the charcoal), lower the charcoal firebox to approximately 1 inch above the flame and let your charcoal light naturally! See how to "Light Your Hasty Bake".

I used this for the first time in my life over the July 4th holiday. I cooked 24 hamburgers on my new Legacy 131. I used very little of this charcoal and it cooked perfectly. It added a great flavor to the hamburgers. I was very impressed.
I did a cursory “Cost/Benefit Analysis” and concluded that by using a bit less, and factoring in the improved flavor this charcoal offers, it’s easily worth the money and it is now my new “Go To” charcoal.
Why buy a new Legacy 131 and cook with regular charcoal and lighter fluid?
This hardwood charcoal does exactly what they say it does. Less ash! It can produce a seriously HOT oven! So, word of caution, a little can go a long way when using this product. While it may not burn as long as regular charcoal, it can get really hot if you're not paying attention. Great product, I have used somewhere around 30 bags or more and it is very consistent.
For Christmas I gave my daughter-in-law a Legacy 131 grill. I also included several other smaller items. Hasty Bake did a great job of breaking up the order and shipping the grill to her home in central Illinois and the remainder of the packages to northern Wisconsin so they could be opened at Christmas. They promised to do this and they fulfilled their promise 100%. I could not be happier. Then, for her birthday in January, I ordered 60 pounds of hardwood charcoal as well as a steak weight. These were delivered on time to her home in central Illinois. Not only does Hasty Bake make great products, but they know how to get them to customers. They exceeded my expectations!
As good as it always was. Not sure if its the same supplier as in the 80s but still great lump.
